MARIGOT--A new access road to the landfill in Grand Cayes was inaugurated Wednesday by Préfète Déléguée Anne Laubiès and First Vice-President of the Collectivité Valérie Damaseau.
The former access road running parallel with the beach was entirely destroyed and washed away by Hurricane Irma’s storm surge.
The new access road was created by a military battalion under the command of Colonel Boris Vallaud. The soldiers who participated attended the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Damaseau thanked the Colonel and his battalion for the work accomplished. Without this road no access to the landfill would have been possible.
The Collectivité indicated in its release that gaining access to the site was a top priority in view of the mountains of waste accumulated after Hurricane Irma. Although the main roads have been cleared in record time with the help of local companies and the trash taken to 11 temporary dump sites, there is still a considerable amount of green vegetation and bulky items such as construction materials that need to be processed at the landfill.
The clean-up is likely to continue for weeks if not months, the Collectivité stated, but it is providing the means and transport to remove waste as quickly as possible.
