PHILIPSBURG--New political parties that want to contest the January 9, 2020, parliamentary election have until October 9 to register with the Electoral Council.
The Council said in a press statement on Sunday evening that in view of the fact that Nomination Day has been set by National Decree on November 21, new political parties will have to submit written applications to register with the Electoral Council no later than 6:00pm Wednesday, October 9.
In addition to the application for registration, political parties will also have to submit to the Electoral Council a notarial deed containing the party’s Articles of Association; an excerpt from the St. Maarten Chamber of Commerce and Industry (COCI); a statement containing the appointment of the party’s authorised representative and authorized deputy representative; and an application for registration of the reference which is to be placed above the list of candidates.
Any party that lost its reference and wishes to re-apply for its reference to be placed above its list can do so before the Wednesday, October 9, deadline. This is also the case for a party wishing to apply for a change of the reference above its list.
Failure to submit an application for party registration by the deadline will result in the party not being able to contest the upcoming election, the Electoral Council said.
In an effort to accommodate the registration of the new political parties and registration of parties’ references, the Electoral Council will be open on Monday, October 7, from 12:00pm to 6:00pm, on Tuesday, October 8, from 1:00pm to 6:00pm and on Wednesday, October 9, from 11:00am to 6:00pm.
