SURFACE WINDS: 
Tonight: Northeasterly with a moderate to strong breeze of 18 to 30 mph with higher gusts possible. 

Saturday: Easterly to southeasterly with a moderate to strong breeze of 16 to 28 mph with higher gusts possible. 

SYNOPSIS:   

Tropical storm Fiona is approaching the Leeward Islands. As Fiona approaches the area the frequency of the passing clouds and shower activity will increase across 

the local area with occasional moderate to heavy rainfall, gusty winds with isolated thunderstorms. These showers may produce flash flooding and rock falls. People in areas prone to flooding and rock slides should take the necessary precautions. 

Hazardous sea conditions are already occurring with swells expected to peak up to 15 feet. Therefore, a small craft warning will remain in effect for St. Maarten until further notice. Small craft operators and sea bathers are advised to stay out of the water until further notice. People with interests along the coast should have completed all preparations to secure their property. 

STATE OF THE SEA:  Rough         WAVES/SWELLS: 9 to 15 feet   

 

SPECIAL FEATURE:  

At 5:00 PM (2100 UTC), the center of tropical storm Fiona was located near latitude 16.4 North, longitude 61.1 West or about 170 miles southeast of St. Maarten. 

Fiona is moving toward the west near 15 mph (24 km/h). On its present forecast track, the center of Fiona is forecast to pass at its closest approximately 80 miles southwest of St. Maarten Saturday morning. Maximum sustained winds remain near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.   

The Meteorological Department of St. Maarten will continue to monitor this system and keep the public updated on impacts. 

OUTLOOK through Sunday evening: Generally cloudy to overcast and windy with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
