Talks on UTS well advanced

WILLEMSTAD--Negotiations between Liberty Latin America and the government of Curaçao on the acquisition of United Telecommunication Services (UTS) are in an advanced stage, according to sources within the company.

Minister Zita Jesus-Leito of Traffic, Transport and Spatial Planning won’t say much pending completion of the talks. She’s being advised by a special commission, under the direction of the former Central Bank director Alberto “Chos” Romero.

Government has not yet decided whether and what percentage of shares it plans to keep of the telecom provider in which St. Maarten also has a minority interest.

The (partial) sale of UTS Curaçao is separate from what’s happening on St. Maarten. The latter is in discussion with local government-owned telephone company TelEm and possibly other strategic partners.

Liberty Latin America is part of Liberty Global, the largest telecom company in the world. Liberty Latin America owns Cable and Wireless with Columbus/Flow. Liberty Latin America operates in 20 countries in the region.
