The Hague’s local government collapses amid corruption probe

THE HAGUE--The Hague’s city administration has collapsed after three of the four coalition parties withdrew their support following the corruption scandal encompassing the major party in the council.

The conservative VVD, centre-democrat D66 and green-left GroenLinks parties have said they have no confidence in the largest party Heart for The Hague/Group de Mos which won eight seats in the last local election.

The party’s two aldermen Richard de Mos and Rachid Guernaoui and a local councillor are all being investigated for possible bribery and corruption in connection with late-night licences for the hospitality industry.

The two aldermen, whose offices were searched by police on Tuesday, have both stood down while the investigation continues. They have denied all involvement in corruption.
