The Lodi infiltration pond, which is filling up with rainwater, is currently only secured by low concrete walls.
ST. EUSTATIUS--Excess soil, vegetation, gravel and other materials were removed during the clean-up of the infiltration pond at Lodi which started in August. The Lodi pond is quite deep and currently only has a low concrete wall acting as a barrier. In securing the perimeter around the pond the public entity St. Eustatius will be taking steps to increase public safety in the area.
Currently, one side of the Lodi pond has two rows of six-inch concrete blocks and four-inch blocks on the other side acting as barriers for vehicles, pedestrians and livestock.
The Directorate of Economy, Nature and Infrastructure stated that the public entity will be taking security measures due to the heavy rainfall during the last week of September, and the potential high risk for the safety of humans and livestock.
Because the delivery of fencing material for the Lodi pond and other infiltration ponds around the island is due to take place at a later date, some temporary measures will be undertaken.
As a short-term emergency measure the perimeter of the Lodi infiltration pond will be secured with high-visibility caution tape. The second measure will be the installation of a temporary barrier and the placement of warning signs.
Besides the Lodi pond, the public entity will also clean out and restored other infiltration ponds in Statia; for example, at Sandy Road and Tompi Hill Head.
