PHILIPSBURG--USA Today has awarded St. Maarten’s Topper’s Rhum Distillery first place in its 10 Best Caribbean Rum Distillery contest.

The competition is amongst some of the most famous rum brands in the world such as Bacardi, Brugal, Angostura, Cruzan, Mount Gay, Appleton Estate and Barbancourt, Topper’s said in a press release on Friday.

USA Today’s 10Best.com, provides travellers with original, unbiased, and experiential travel content around the world. At its core is a team of well-travelled and well-educated experts who are known in their fields for their discriminating tastes, the release said.

Topper’s Rhum, a locally-made product, is a world-class, multi-award-winning, premium rum that is handmade, bottled, and packaged in Cole Bay, St. Maarten. Topper’s Rhum only uses all-natural premium ingredients and no preservatives.

Topper’s is committed to producing the world’s best tasting rum and rum- flavoured spirits, using the highest standards of quality. It is re-inventing rum by continually innovating and delivering unique products to their customers worldwide, the release said.

“Topper’s Rhum is very environmentally-conscientious and well-known for their signature reusable swing-top bottles. This official St. Maarten rum is the only international multiple award-winning spirit distilled and exported from St. Maarten,” the release said.

Topper’s currently exports to seven countries and 23 states in the USA, and is the official rum of the Dutch Army. Its products are also sold online.

Topper’s Rhum has already won 24 international medals awarded by rum tasting contests. Through its tours and its continuing expansion overseas, it is promoting St. Maarten internationally.

Topper’s Rhum Distillery is a unique place to visit in St. Maarten, according to the St. Maarten Tourism Bureau. Its famous Rhum Tap offers 12 flavours, ready for sampling. Hands-on tours are also offered, where a guide takes guests through the 6,000-square-foot distillery to learn the history of rum-making and get a behind-the-scenes look at how it is fermented, distilled, aged, blended and bottled.

At the tasting bar, persons can try some of the 50 flavours in development and enjoy samples of Topper’s artisanal products as well as its rum cake. The boutique sells St. Maarten gifts and rum, including limited edition flavours that are only available at the distillery.

Topper’s Rhum distillery is open for free rum tastings and shopping from 9:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday and from 9:00am to 12:00pm on Saturdays. Tours are available for $20 at 10:00am and 4:00pm, Monday to Saturday. Sundays are available by appointment only.
