Unemployment situation troubling, says Paul Whit

MARIGOT--Unemployment in the community was a subject addressed at Wednesday’s press conference organised by District Five. A number of job seekers attended.

District Five representative Paul Whit said it was not acceptable that jobs and projects were given to persons outside of the district. A list of the unemployed in the district is being prepared to present to the Collectivité in the form of a petition unless the situation is not corrected.

Some of the unemployed young people gave their point of view on the situation.

“The problem is we always have to wait. I also feel discriminated against because I went to jail. But others who came out after me got jobs because they were related to somebody or had family members working in the Collectivité. This has to change,” said a 20-year-old attendee.

Another in attendance said: “I have a part time job but it’s not what I want. I don’t find there is interest in finding mature people employment or training them. And some young people don’t take their job opportunities seriously.”

“It’s difficult to find jobs and personally I don’t see much diversity in the jobs that are proposed. Not everyone wants to cut grass,” said 18-year-old Jessy.

A young gent in his 20’s said: “It doesn’t make sense to look for a job on the French-side any longer. You never have enough experience, you never have enough diplomas. I know some people who have degrees and they still have to leave the island or sell drugs.”
