Widespread load shedding as GEBE ‘overhauls’ its engines

PHILIPSBURG--Several sections of the country were left without power for varying times on Monday as utilities company GEBE load shed due to the overhauling of its engines.

The company said in a statement that power interruptions can be expected periodically due to the overhauling of engines. The interruption in power can last up to two hours. “We understand your frustration with the power outages,” GEBE said to customers. “The current works will be completed by the end of next week at which time we will see improvement in the reliability of our power distribution.”

“We will continue making other power related upgrades in October and November as well to catch up with deferred maintenance.”

Lights went out from early Monday with outages reported in several areas including Dutch Quarter and Cole Bay. In one section of Dutch Quarter the outage lasted about two hours. There were reports that Cole Bay was out for several hours, then the power was restored and went again, much to the chagrin of residents in that district. Other districts that complained of outages include Sucker Garden and the Fort Willem area.

Some businesses complained that the outages were affecting their operations. GEBE apologises for the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their “understanding” as they “continue to improve our service.”
