PHILIPSBURG--The public and medical professionals will be apprised of the latest information on diabetes at a public meeting and conference coordinated by the Windward Islands Medical Association (WIMA) in conjunction with the Rotary Club of St. Maarten and Platinum sponsor NAGICO Insurances.
The conference for medical professionals on the state of diabetes treatment and care in St. Maarten will be held at the Belair Community Center from October 11 to 12. The conference is expected to be attended by more than 100 medical professionals from around the region and five international experts on diabetes.
A free public meeting on diabetes will precede the medical conference at the Belair Community Center, this evening, October 10, at 6:45. “All members of our community are encouraged to attend this informative and free public session.
“There will be presentations from experts in the field of diabetes care, along with foot care and diet experts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to ask the professionals direct questions about diabetes and ways to reduce risks of getting the disease,” President of the Rotary Club of St. Maarten Sherrylle Horsford said. “We are thankful for our partnership with NAGICO. NAGICO’s role as our Platinum sponsor truly makes this event possible and for that we are grateful,” she added.
Visiting endocrinologist from the Netherlands who specializes in diabetes care, Dr. Nelleke “Nel” Geelhoed-Duijvestein said diabetes is an increasing problem in the Caribbean and is living up to its name as the silent killer. “So, we need to do all we can to create awareness, to help prevent, treat and advise families how to take care of loved ones suffering from diabetes,” he said.
