PHILIPSBURG--The Prosecutor’s Office issued a reminder to the general public on Tuesday about its zero-tolerance policy for the election and campaigning period.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the election period is considered to be an event for which the special events guidelines are to be applied, like the guidelines used during the Heineken Regatta, Carnival and before a hurricane strike.
“The zero-tolerance policy is in place to defend the community and prevent serious harm to health and safety, as well as safeguard the continuation of public administration, protect vital public interests, protect the environment from serious damage, protect important personal property, limit economic damage and protect animal life,” said the Prosecutor’s Office in a press release on Tuesday morning.
The Prosecutor’s Office also pointed out that although a permit is not mandatory to host a rally, organisers must inform the Ministry of Justice and the St. Maarten Police Force KPSM of its location, date and time.
“Individuals should be cautious of interrupting traffic or placing campaign paraphernalia in locations that obstruct mobility,” concluded the Prosecutor’s Office.
