‘Brisk showers’ cause flash floods in south and central Trinidad

PORT-OF-SPAIN, Trinidad--The “brisk showers” forecast by the Meteorological Office turned into a deluge in Debe, south Trinidad, and Chaguanas in central Trinidad, with flash floods marooning some residents and drivers.

Hundreds of residents along the SS Erin Main Road, Debe Main Road, Wellington Road and Chester Street were affected by the rising waters.

The Met office stated: “A mostly hot and sunny day will be interrupted by few cloudy patches with brisk showers in a few areas. There is the slight chance of the afternoon thundershower mainly over western areas of Trinidad. Tonight will be mostly clear and warm despite the odd shower in confined areas.”

According to chairman of the Penal/Debe Regional Corporation Premchand Sookoo, he received more than 40 calls from residents asking for assistance to and from their homes.

He said: “I have already had the Disaster Management Unit out in the field and assessing the situation. We trying to assist all of the residents in whatever capacity we can.”

Chester Street resident Balmesh Sieunarine said he and his family were tired of dealing with the same situation every time it rains heavily.

Flooding to that area has been a recurring problem after a private land owner began developing a property, said Sieunarine.

Sookoo said that the regional corporation intends to have the road cut and turned into a one-way to ease the flooding issue.

However, he said that the corporation is waiting for the necessary approvals before this can be done.

Flooding was also reported in Edinburg 500, Chaguanas, with roads being made impassable for several hours. ~ Trinidad Express ~
