Guard under suspicion after 173 inmates break out of Haiti jail

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti--A guard at a Haiti prison is suspected of helping 173 inmates escape from a prison over the weekend.

The breakout from the Arcahaie prison occurred on Saturday, and the inmates killed the head prison guard and wounded two other guards in the process.

The Associated Press said a preliminary investigation indicated that a guard “forgot” to lock a door as the inmates were eating. The prisoners then left the cafeteria and armed themselves with police weapons, it quoted a source as saying.

It appears the inmates stripped the prison guards – all National Police agents – of their weapons.

Some of those who escaped were considered armed and dangerous and around 20 of them were serving more than 10 years.

While some of the inmates at the prison were awaiting trial, all those who escaped from Arcahaie had been found guilty and were serving sentences.

Police have so far recaptured 10 of the escapees.

Arcahaie will remain empty while the investigation continues, with all remaining inmates moved to a different prison. ~ Caribbean360 ~
