Two children, two men drown off Trinidad coast

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad--Four people drowned in two separate incidents at beaches on the East coast on Sunday. The bodies of pensioner Morris Sammy and his nine-year-old granddaughter Anastazia Ali resurfaced a few minutes later.

The girl, a standard three pupil of St. Gabriel RC primary school in San Fernando, was taken to the Mayaro Health Centre where she was pronounced dead. Her grandfather died at the scene. Relatives said the family, of Gopaul Lands, Marabella, were spending time at a beach house on Coconut Drive when the incident occurred around 10:30am.

And Coast Guard officers are searching for the bodies of a security guard and his 13-year-old daughter who drowned near the Mitan River Mouth Manzanilla.

Police said Renisha Basdeo was washing her hands in the water when she got into difficulties. Her father went in to assist and they both went beneath the water.

The family who lives at Robert Village, Tableland, were on a camping trip when the incident occurred around 8:00am. ~ Trinidad Express ~
