Peterson's first career hit lifts the Tigers over Yankees in 9th

NEW YORK--Dustin Peterson hit a tiebreaking double off Aroldis Chapman with one out in the top of the ninth inning Tuesday night, and the Detroit Tigers recorded a 3-1 victory over the New York Yankees at frigid Yankee Stadium.

Peterson recorded his first career hit and first career RBI when he laced a 95 mph fastball well over left fielder Mike Tauchman's head. The ball bounced to the base of the fence and easily allowed Niko Goodrum to score.
Chapman (0-1) started the inning by fanning John Hicks, but then issued a walk to Goodrum, who batted for rookie Christin Stewart. That gave Peterson, a rookie center fielder, a chance to produce in his 10th career at-bat.
Detroit added insurance two batters later when Peterson scored on a single by Jordy Mercer, who had the Tigers' only two hits Monday.
Before Peterson's hit gave Detroit its third win of the season, Hicks hit a game-tying double off Masahiro Tanaka in the sixth.
The Tigers picked up the late win on a 45-degree night, after Opening Day starter Jordan Zimmerman produced a second straight stellar outing. Pitching while wearing short sleeves, Zimmermann followed up his gem from Toronto by holding the Yankees to one run on six hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 94-pitch outing.
Daniel Stumpf recorded the final out of the seventh, and Joe Jimenez (1-0) ended a scoreless eighth by getting Gleyber Torres on a double play after hitting Luke Voit on the wrist. Shane Greene needed 10 pitches in a perfect ninth to notch his third save.
With four regulars out of the starting lineup and on the injured list, the Yankees dropped to 2-3. They scored their lone run in the second on a sacrifice fly by Clint Frazier, who was called up Monday when Giancarlo Stanton went on the IL.
New York's lack of offense wasted a second straight solid start by Tanaka. Tanaka held the Tigers to one run on eight hits in 6 2/3 innings while throwing 63 of 87 pitches for strikes.
