Late starting Battle of the Islands well attended

PHILIPSBURG--The Battle of the Islands featured two nights of amateur boxing at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium Friday and Saturday.

Action started late. The doors were scheduled to open at 8:00pm Friday. However, the first bout did not start until 11:30pm as organizers were still busy setting up the ring.
“Thanks to the general public for the support and patient with us during our difficulty with the ring that we have to rent the ring from the French side,” said Shawn Blair of the St. Maarten National Boxing Federation. “If we had our own ring then we could have put it up before time.”

Jenny Steel a teacher on St. Maarten fought Harmony Merist in the main event and lost on Saturday.
Malcolm Phillips, from St. Maarten, started the competition Friday facing Wood Blayze from Cayman Islands. Phillips won.

Bout two featured Joey Gogulsk of Curacao against Antigua’s Joshua Toussaint. Toussaint won.
St. Maarten’s Shamar Bertram was pitted against Thase Walter in bout three. Bertram won.
St. Maarten fighter Stephan Duzong lost to Amory Payne.
Despite the late start both nights were well attended.
The competition was sponsored by Rouge et Noir Casino, St. Maarten Concrete and Stars Casino.
