SIMPSON BAY-- Corentine Corroy took first place in the Optimist Racing Class of the St. Maarten Yacht Club’s annual Dinghy Race, called the Soon Series. Clement le Normand was second and Sarah Michaux was third in the 13boat class.
A total of 27 sailors, including competitors from St. Barths and Friars Bay St. Martin and students from the St. Maarten Yacht Club sailing school took part in Day One of the series Saturday.
The Series is part of the Grant Thornton Dinghy Season Championship. Day One
consisted of 4 races and 4 distinct classes of sailboats including RS Quest, RS Zest, Laser and the Optimist.
Justin Pieterse won the Laser class which featured 11 competitors. Emilien le Normand was second and followed by Jordan Pieterse in third place.
In the RS Quest class it was a battle between the St. Maarten Yacht Club and the St. Barths Yacht Club. Joris and Axel vanden Eynde from team SXM took the win over the French team of Antonin Scion and his crew.
With two competitors in the RS Zest class, Robbie Ferron took the win over Massimo Lapierre.
Soon Series Day 2 is set for October 8.
