CAY HILL--The SCSA Eagles defeated C & D Connection in a penalty shoot out to win the St. Maarten Football Federation 2022 Domestic League Cup Champion at Raoul Illidge Sports Complex Saturday evening.
SCSA Eagles started off the better side in the match, controlling most of the game early on and were rewarded with a penalty kick in the first half, which they converted.
After the break, both teams were fighting to get that all important next goal. C & D Connection were awarded a penalty kick after a foul inside the SCSA Eagles penalty area. C & D tied the game at
1-1.
Eagles were awarded yet another penalty kick as a C & D Connection player was deemed to have handled the ball in the penalty area. This was the player’s second book-able offence in the match and he was therefore shown a red card and C & D had to play the remainder of the game with 10 men.
Eagles converted running their tally to 2-1.
C & D Connection kept the pressure up and pushed for the tying goal despite being down a man.
Their hard fought effort was rewarded late.
Both teams got some half chances towards the end of the match but were unable to convert any.
The match ended 2-2, which meant penalty kicks to determine the winner.
Back and forth in the penalty shoot-out, with both goalkeepers each saving one spot kick, making it 4-4 after 5 kicks each. The championship would be decided in sudden death.
C & D were up first in taking their sixth kick. It got saved.
It was the Eagles turn. The ball found the back of the net. Eagles won 5-4 on penalty kicks.
SCSA Eagles #10 Edermar La Cruz was named MVP of the match.
