St. Maarten draws US Virgin Islands, Grenada in first round Caribbean Cup

ANTIGUA--St. Maarten will face Grenada and the US Virgin Islands in the first round of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Men’s Caribbean Cup in March.  


  The draw was held in Antigua January 16.  Representing St. Maarten were Dwayne Wright and Danaë Daal from the St. Maarten Soccer Association.
  A total of 21 teams are expected to compete. The competition has been divided into seven groups.
In group 1 are Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis and Aruba. Group three features Cuba, Bermuda and French Guiana.  Group four consists of Barbados, Curacao and Dominican Republic.  In group five are Guyana, Puerto Rico and Anguilla.  Guadeloupe, St. Martin and Suriname make up group six and in group seven are Martinique, British Virgin Islands and Dominica.
The first stage of the Men’s Caribbean Cup starts March 21.  St. Maarten will be represented by Flames Football Club who are the reigning champions from the 2014/2015 Senior league competitions and the Champions of the 2012/2013 Excellence division between the island of Sint Maarten, Saint Martin and St. Barths.
   “Our team is ready to compete for the first time in the CFU Men’s Club Championship and we are confident that St. Maarten will showcase the many talents we have” said  Flames United President Dwayne Wright.
  In other soccer news, this coming weekend the Futsal National Team will be traveling to Cuba participate in the CONCACAF Futsal competition.
