ST. EUSTATIUS –Statia athlets took home 14 medals in track and field in the inter-island school sports tournament. The tournament was held on the island of Saba May 31 to June 1.
In the 60m female competition, Chanel Schmidt came crossed the finish line in third place and in the male segment John Longin won the race.
Chanel Schmidt and Rafael Philip both placed first in the female and male 100m run, respectively. In the 200m female race, Chanel Schmidt finished third while Rafael Philip finished first and Delisandro Berkel came in third.
Jahvon Hous won the 400m male division, while John Longin finished second.
In the Relay, the Statia team placed third. The relay team consisted of Rafael Philip, John Longin, Liddle leverock and Jahvon Hous.
Chanel Schmidt won the 6.7km female event and in the male division, Delisandro Berkel crossed the finish line in second.
Overall Statia placed second.
The track and field team was coached Asha Robins.
Robins said: “I want to say I'm very proud of my young athletes as this was their 1st time competing internationally and they did a wonderful job. Competing is about going out there and having fun and I always say if you love what you do and do it with respect and hard work, you will make it anywhere you want to go. The Statia team are heroes with or without the medals. I encourage everyone to keep doing their best and go for your dream and goals where ever your passion takes you.”
Deputy Government Commissioner of Sports, Mervyn Stegers was on hand to welcome the track and field athletes back to the island along with family and friends as well as Royalty Organization Eux on Sunday. Stegers said a few words where he congratulated the team for a job well done. The team was welcomed back to the island by a large crowd at the boardwalk's roll-on roll-off pier.
