Decoding the many messages Hurricane Irma brought us

(We all know that the aftereffects of Irma are not over yet)

By PPJ ‘Peter’ Smits

Hurricane Irma, a reflection of the hurricane, tension and stressful lifestyles we lead; not to forget the hurricanes in our relationships, family, business and inside our own body and mind.

“If a warrior is to succeed at anything, the success must come gently,

with a great deal of effort but with no stress or obsession.”

Carlos Castaneda

Irma forced us out of our false comfort, to make us aware that there is no real security in this physical life and came to test our faith, took many roofs away and hopefully opened us up again for that Something Real, that Something Higher and Eternal within us.

“God must become an activity in our consciousness.”

Joel S. Goldsmith

After Irma we saw and still see the endless items on the garbage sites, showing us definitely that we are collectors and consumers and by staying these consumers supporting all this waste, wasting our life and consuming the health of ourselves, others and the planet.

“The only thing we have to fear on the planet is man.”

Carl Gustav Jung

Irma brought us a time to rethink, reprioritise and simplify life and to hopefully not frantically and desperately chase to get back to that consumer’s and consuming lifestyle.

“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

Leonardo da Vinci

Some had to face death and find out about our strong attachments to the body, others and possessions; didn’t we all come without anybody and anything and one day will go without anything and anybody?

“Pray to God that your attachment to such transitory things as wealth, name, and creature comforts may become less and less every day.”

Ramakrishna

Confronted with the sound of silence, as all the external noise and digital devices fell away, it was not easy for many of us who are addicted to constant noise and motion and afraid of the silence.

“All men’s miseries derive from not being able to sit quiet in a room alone.”

Blaise Pascal

Irma came to teach us to step out of our pitiful egocentric life and gave us the opportunity to serve and assist others in need. It was for a short while a real community and remembrance of living in a harmonious tribe; a feeling of support and exchange.

“A healthy social life is found only when in the mirror of each soul the whole community finds its reflection and when in the whole community the virtue of each one is living.”

Rudolf Steiner

Irma pushed many to make decisions that before were not made voluntarily and/or were delayed. It created many shifts and changes and is not change the most consistent factor of the Universe? Change is the adventure of life.

“Without accepting the fact that everything changes, we cannot find perfect composure. But unfortunately, although it is true, it is difficult for us to accept it. Because we cannot accept the truth of transience, we suffer.”

Shinichi Suzuki

We are all tired and connecting this to Irma which was just the drop that went over the bucket. It all lead up to that moment, forgetting that the lifestyles we were living were already wearing us out. Our bodies are stressed out, tired from not getting sufficient rest and malnourished from consuming life energy depleted food and not to forget all our destructive unhealthy habits.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Albert Einstein
