The choice to call this issue the “Duality Issue” was no accident in that the millennial male is a very versatile creature in more ways than one. Because he is creating his own setting in the world, it can only be expected to find today’s fashions using influences of yesterday, today and tomorrow. The fashion-conscious male is even more visually aware of his surroundings. He adds aspects of his personality and political statements in what he wears, and he does not apologize for this.
Today’s garments have adopted more feminine elements and Western ateliers are using Eastern cuts and design trends. One very blatant style choice in the revolution is to merge the high fashion with casual pieces and call it street or athleisure wear. Nothing is off limits to this generation and all things sacred are being desecrated in the name of fashion; but what is fashion if not the recreation of ideals merged with art?
The 70s
The current obsession of the fashion world is the 70s. While many of today’s designers were still quietly nested in their mother’s ovaries, the bold textured hues ruled the fashion world. Now the 70s is back with a vengeance, so it’s time to start talking to your dad, or that old uncle who never seems to update his wardrobe, they’re [plug emoji]. Now, it’s not just about copying the style; you’re allowed to add modern pieces with the pieces to create a more neo-70s look. The look is about paying homage without totally copying.
Fall colours
It might be disrespectful to the fashion lords and ladies to say this, but understanding fashion is to wield the knowledge that each season has a specific range of colours and they don’t change. Every now and then, the fashion collective (whoever they are) decide to throw in a curveball by calling the colours things like Oxblood, but they’re basically all in the same style profile. This fall heads back to classically named colours like emerald green, browns and burgundy.
Tartan
Think private school uniforms. Tartan is a popular pattern choice again, featured most prominently in the form of bold suits featuring this classic design. While tartans in traditional colours is classic, try experimenting with bolder and brighter versions for a more vivid take on the trend like reds, mustards and bright greens. A bright tartan blazer will work nicely as a focal point for your outfits, so accessorize accordingly with minimal pieces and don’t overdo it. Less is more!
Statement jackets
What would this generation be without an obsession with statement jackets? There is no pretence with this trend. It’s just like it sounds. The jackets literally have bold words and political statements written across visible parts of the garment. The words are emboldened through vivid colours and novel textures.
Novelty sweaters
If you were ever gifted a very ugly sweater, this fall would be the time to throw it on! The choice to wear these sweaters says you never take fashion or yourself too seriously. Whether it’s a cartooned graphic or a vulgar retro ad, novelty sweaters have been playfully featured on the streets, lending personality to the simplest of looks. The key to choosing novelty sweaters is to adapt it to your personal style. Make sure to pair it with simpler pieces so as not to look junky. Since we live in the Caribbean, a sweet alternative is a denim jacket or perhaps only wearing it at work where the AC is kicking all day. Watch out for GEBE, as they can ruin this for you. Your look could go from hot style to swamp chest really fast.
Happy Stylin’!
