“Reuse-Recycle-Reduce” takes on a new meaning.
Here are some lovely photos from the event that took place at the beginning of this month.
Every year for five years, a special kind of Easter egg hunt takes place on St. Maarten. This egg hunt is a charity event whereby money collected goes to the Nature Foundation. Usually, this event takes place at Divi Little Resort; but after Irma, the beach was not deemed quite ready for the event so a new venue was found.
The set up at Kokomo Beach on Indigo Bay presented a few challenges. The beach is a little rocky, so the little ones could not look for eggs in the very shallow water. The organizers dug a shallow hole in the sand and with the help of a waterproof awning made a lovely pond for the littlest ones to search for eggs.
The eggs this year were not boiled eggs. The organizers felt that as everyone is trying to make a “green foot print” on this planet, they would too. There were a lot of small rocks in a pile that could be used as “eggs.” These were collected (almost 4,000 of them) and spray-painted in bright colours. These eggs were “found” by the divers and snorkelers and can be reused next year; usually over 2,000 hardboiled eggs are “found” by the participants.
This year, the tiniest participants were able to really be a part of the event in their “swimming pool.” The next age group had a special event set up for them too – a fun slip and slide whereby they took it in turns to slip along to the deeper “swimming pool” and go under the water to “find” the eggs.
The older groups made their way out over the rocks into the very clear snorkelling water where they had the best time collecting these brightly coloured “eggs.”
And this year, the scuba divers joined in. They came by boat and went down with their scuba tanks and looked for “eggs” that had been laid in the deeper water.
At the end of the event, participants who were lucky to have their winning numbers drawn received some wonderful donated prizes.
Everyone had a fabulous time; it was a fabulous day hosted at Kokomo.
Keep an eye on the date for the 6th Annual Easter Egg Snorkel event in 2019. You don’t want to miss that!
