Health Corner: Getting Along with Everyone

It is a good thing to get along with your peers and your teachers at school. Getting along with your teachers is especially a good thing, because it makes your time at school happier and easier for you and everyone else as well.

Being able to get along with your teachers will make you more comfortable asking them questions and telling them about things. Getting along with them will help you, the student, learn more.

Your teacher knows that, and in most cases, is thrilled to be the person who’s giving you all that material and helps you put it together. Teachers are people who love to help their students to learn, and if the student is receptive to being taught in the classroom, the teacher will try even harder to help the student pass, because they love to teach and see their students do well.

“Getting along” means you, your peers and your teacher have a way of communicating that works in a good way. Students who are paying attention, are respectful and polite and try their best to learn are great for the classroom. A teacher who is respectful to the students, answers their questions and tries to help the students learn, encourages the whole class to “get along” well.

Some teachers are remembered long after the students have left school. The teacher has been an important part of the student’s life for many years. These teachers are the ones that are fair and respectful to the students. Even after the student has left school, they still like to meet up with the teacher as a well-respected friend.

Students do make mistakes, it is a part of learning. When the teacher points out these mistakes they are helping the student correct those mistakes – this means the teacher is helping the student.

Personality clashes can happen between any two people. If there is a problem like that, there is a way to solve this problem by talking to an adult the student can trust. This could be a parent or a guidance counsellor.

After talking to the trusted adult, a meeting could be set up where the problem can be discussed. This could clear the air and get the problem sorted out. This way of dealing with problems is a good way to solve the situation. This is how an adult usually deals with problems. It is a way of becoming an adult yourself.
The relationship with a teacher is often the first chance to develop a “business relationship.” Being polite and business-like is the way to act in the classroom. Students should follow directions and learn and obey the rules of the classroom.

Even if the teacher or some of the other students in the classroom are not your most favourite, it is still possible to get along with the whole classroom, because the classroom relationship is not one about family love, but more about respect as there should be in the business world.

Students have responsibilities:
Attend class and be ready to learn.
Be prepared for class and arrive with the right gear: pens, pencils, books and completed assignments.
Listen when your teacher is talking. Show respect to the teacher and the other students.
Always do your best in classroom assignments, homework or tests.

Getting along with everyone usually works when the student has respect for him/herself. Showing respect for oneself starts by eating, sleeping, dressing in a healthy way; being polite and considerate of others and adhering to school rules.
