Kidz at Sea

Setting New Courses

Have you ever wondered what it's like to sail around on the Lagoon in Simpson Bay? What about building your own boat? Would you like to be a captain of your own boat some day? Well, there are some high school students who are doing all of that right now! Guess what, they're right here on St. Maarten! Many of them are as young as 15 but some are closer to 18 years old and they all go to Milton Peters College. Just think, when you get to that age, if you want to build a boat or sail one, you can do it!

The Purple Heart is the name of the boat that these kids built. It is 26 feet long! That's really long! It took the students a whole year to make. They were not sure if the boat would be ready for the Heineken Regatta, but they worked hard and made it happen. The Kidz at Sea Foundation is working with Milton Peters College to make boatbuilding part of the classes. So, the kids were able to build the boat during school and work on it on the weekends.

Last Saturday, August 20, there was a small party for some of the young students who built the boat. There were very important people there, like some ministers and of course the kids who worked to build the boat. They said it was hard work, but very fun.
