Pet Care: CATS

Every pet deserves the best care you can give it. So here are some tips on how to look after them. This week we are focusing on how to give the best care to cats.

Regular vet trips

Just like you, cats need to visit their special cat-doctor once a year to receive check-ups and booster vaccinations.

Vaccinations

Cats get sick too and need vaccinations in order to stay happy and healthy.

Feeding

Feed your cat once a day with quality tined or dry food. Cats are carnivores (meaning they only eat meat) so do not put them on a vegetarian diet. Make sure that your cat always has access to fresh water.

Neutering

Neutering your cat means you’ve taken it to the vet so that it can’t have babies. This process is done to both males and females in order to create fewer unwanted kittens, and better mannered cats.

Personal space

Make sure your cat has an area of personal space with some privacy. A comfy cat bed with high walls or a little tent over it is puuuurrrrfect. Remember to wash your cat’s bed regularly.

Litter box

If you own a cat, make sure that it not only has a place to “go” but also that the litter box is cleaned regularly. Because while some litter will have scent cancelling chemicals, there’s only so long it will work until your entire house stinks. Plus no one likes to use a messy bathroom, so why should your cat?

Play with your cat

Playing with your cat every day not only gives it exercise but also some much needed human interaction and social time. Use small toys for your cat to chase or something at the end of a pole for extra fun. Lasers are also fun for your cat to chase.

Grooming

While your cat may not need a bath, regular brushing is great to remove any loose cat hair that prevents a later mess and is much enjoyed by the cat. It also creates an opportunity to make sure your cat has no unusual lumps and no fleas.

Now that you know how to look after your cat, do so to the best of your ability. If you are looking to get a new cat, make sure to look in several animal shelters. Also know that while kittens are cute, fully grown cats also need a loving home and are capable of giving love and cuddles as well. Remember that cats can live for up to 20 years, so when you get a cat, be sure to be ready to commit to those years of love and care.
