Emilio Wilson Park goes to the dogs
~ For AWF Dog Show ~
Paws will rule the day on Sunday, November 15, when St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF) holds its regular Dog Show in Emilio Wilson Historical and Cultural Park. The bark-off starts with registration at 1:00pm. The last woof for the Dog Show will be at 5:00pm.
This is the 20th instalment of the Dog Show. A new twist is the Doggie Olympics – a series of agility games to test the fitness of all dogs.
AWF Publicity Director Heather Caputo said, “We want to make the Dog Show especially entertaining with a fun-filled Doggie Olympics existing of obstacles adjustable to the size of anyone’s dog.”
The Dog Show also provides an opportunity for AWF to share with the public its collection of hilarious dog-themed photos from the Internet.
The judging of the large pure breed dogs commences at 2:00pm as these are the dogs that Doggie Olympics were originally designed for. “We certainly hope owners bring lots of them to test the agility obstacles. But don't count out the little dogs. Lower the bars and ramps and they can whip through obstacles as quick as their larger kin,” said Caputo.
Besides small, medium and large size categories for Breed and Non-breed, novelty classes such as Best Kiss are planned. Owners will be presented ribbons and trophies based on their dogs’ overall condition and personality. The traditional all-around trophy class will close the show.
Entry fee is US $10 ($5 for each additional dog) and entitles participants to all classes and activities. Spectators are free of charge and are encouraged to come out and cheer on their favourite canines. Food and drink will be available.
