Delightful Luncheon @ Palm Beach

When celebrating a birthday and, luckily, also having the day off, Palm Beach is a perfect place to head for to have lunch. We arrived in the parking lot one Saturday and wondered if in fact the restaurant was open, as there appeared to be only a few cars and no one wandering around, not like on Sundays when we usually go there.

Then we noticed a lot of activity going on close to the main building and soon realized that there were many folk bustling about to get things set up for a music festival held over the next few days.

We made our way to the large bar deck to find there were in fact quite a few patrons at the bar and on the beach and decided to get loungers rather than sit in the dining deck area. There were not many diners sitting at the tables and then we realized that it was about 3:00pm already, Oh dear! Would we be able to get lunch?

Not only were we able to order lunch it was a very, very good lunch. The waiter was funny and quick with his delivery. The plates were presented with flair, we were very happy with what we ordered, needless to say.

First up we shared a Burrata, which came with just enough toast points for one, but a basket of fresh baguette was quickly brought out to us. The pesto sauce and sun-dried tomatoes were the usual delicious sauces but the prosciutto that came with this dish was excellent.

Next up we ordered the “Tapas Mixte Plate” which consisted of chicken nems, salmon rillettes, tomato and mozzarella skewers, fried calamari, octopus toast and grilled shrimp on a skewer and a dipping sauce. There were no fried calamari, but in fact we did not realize this until we read through the menu, wondering what to have for our dessert! The plate was perfect for a picnic lunch on the beach, the salmon rillettes were light and flavour-some, but the octopus toast won hands down; Tiny morsels of tender octopus with a dash of carrot and vinaigrette.

We did order a plate of “nems,” separate to the “tapas plate” as one of us is allergic to shell fish. The nems were crispy and had the wrappings to go with them i.e. lettuce leaves and mint with the dipping sauce. We shared a main, as we could not resist the duck with foie gras sauce – Once again, good, not a morsel left.

We let out that we were celebrating a birthday and, of course, dessert came with the big-bang sparkler – one is never too old to enjoy a presentation like this, the smile on the birthday “celebrator’s” face is always a joy to see!

Our desserts hit the spot: a crème brulée, a chocolaty chocolate mousse (possible too much whipped cream) and a hot chocolate lava cake with vanilla ice cream and mango sauce. Yes, sir – could we, please, have some more.

Palm Beach did not disappoint (There was the icing on the cake this visit - a chap approached offering to give a foot massage, we took him up and had possibly the best foot massage ever!)
