Eat @ Pizza del Sol

 ~ Fresh from Italy ~

Once again we marvel at the great eating offered on our little island. We are lucky indeed. Need more evidence? Check out Pizza del Sol in Simpson Bay! The atmosphere is warm and welcoming. As soon as you walk in, you feel you’re in an authentic Italian eatery complete with a wood burning pizza oven and a dough spinning chef in the back. The walls are adorned with gorgeous ladies on vespas and a big flat screen TV that shows landscapes and extreme sports daredevils. With all this going on in a cosy dining room, it still feels relaxing. Many prefer to eat out on the terrace, which is also very nice, exposed to the lively street life of Simpson Bay’s Welfare Road strip.

We opted for the airco and settled in with a gaze at the menu. For us, it had to be pizza, but what kind? The menu contained so many varieties; it was hard to make a choice. There are some things I haven’t seen or even heard of before for pizza! Fresh duck foie gras? Smoked salmon? What about the savoyarde pizza which boasts white cream, mozzarella, bacon, reblochon cheese, potatoes, onions and black olives, or the Kebab pizza which has white cream, mozzarella, chicken, ground beef onions and black olives, or the most surprising of all: the New Delhi topped with tomato sauce, mozzarella, spicy chicken, zucchini, eggplant, onions, peppers and tandoori sauce. Wow! I was almost that brave, but maybe next time!

I ended up ordering the prosciutto pizza and my dining companion wanted something with a kick so he ordered the vesuvio which promised Italian sausage, peppers and tapenade along with the cheese and sauce. Our orders arrived in no time at all, I was amazed by the amount of prosciutto piled on top of my pizza and the flavours were out of this world! We indulged and enjoyed and still had some to take home for a midnight snack. Not that this means there wasn’t room for dessert!

Turns out the dessert is a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds! Never have I seen such a gorgeously presented pastry with ice cream, the chocolate sauce used to create a musical score complete with a treble clef and quarter notes! This was a fancifully crafted work of art and you got to eat it too! That’s my idea of noteworthy!

I recommend this little restaurant for special occasions and ordinary dinners out. They will make you feel right at home, present you with reasonably priced food that is delicious and very special in every way. Don’t miss out on trying the full menu of pizzas, calzones, pastas, veal dishes and risottos.
