In the Hot Seat with Kenyo Baly

In the Hot Seat with Kenyo Baly

For this week’s Hot Seat, the Out N About sat down with talented vocalist, songwriter, and soulful artiste Kenyo Baly, who will be having a video release on December 13 for his new song “Bad Habit”. Kenyo tells us all about his music career and how he has spent the past five years working hard to get to this point.

How would you describe your song in this video and what can you tell us about it?

The song in this video is titled “Bad Habit”. The sound of this track bridges my original vibe of soca music into “Afro-Soul.” As we approach the New Year, it’s a good time to review our habits. It’s important to find the correct balance that works for you. In other words, always work on progress and improvements, but also stay true to yourself! Life is about pleasures and enjoying the vibes of the moment… and the music!

How did you start as a vocalist and when did you start writing your own songs?

I was originally recognized at six years old in church. After I graduated from high school, I did a lot of live shows and therefore learned all about confidence and stage presence. My choir instructor encouraged me to make a career out of singing. I chose to go into performing professionally abroad.

What is your favourite St. Maarten saying?

My favourite St. Maarten saying is: ‘”Who Yuh Fuh?” I have also written and released a song with the same title.

What do you love about being from St. Maarten?

What’s not to love?! I have been fortunate enough to travel in my professional career, but there is nothing like that feeling of landing back home and performing in The Friendly Island.

What is your favourite thing about being musically gifted?

I love to perform live. Because I am blessed to bring people together into a setting where they can tune in to the sound and let their cares drift away! I have been awarded the Soca Monarch Crown twice in the Groovy category.

What can we expect from you in 2025?

“Bad Habit” is the lead single on the EP, which I have titled “Saturn’s Return” which is unfolding year – so stay tuned @ iamkenyobaly.

What have been your favourite live performances?

The 2018 Second Groovy Crown Award and the 2024Heineken Regatta.

What would you advise your younger self; or anyone who needs further encouragement to pursue their creative dreams?

Stay true to yourself and always have faith.
