For this week’s Hot Seat, Out N About sat down with Leeyo, a drummer here in St. Maarten-St. Martin. He tells us all about his career, experiences, philosophies and what he loves about St. Maarten-St. Martin.

Please introduce yourself. How would you describe your music style?

My name is Leonardo Richardson, also known as Leeyo on the Drums. I’d describe my style as a melting pot of versatility just as we are right here on this beautiful island of St. Maarten-St. Martin.

Were you born here, and what languages do you speak?

Yes. I was born here in St. Maarten, and I speak Dutch, English and Papiamento.

How did you get started in the music industry?

I owe my beginnings and growth in the music field to Connis Vanterpool, Roelof Matthew (basses), Fred York, Claudy Labega and Vernon Verwoord. They really took their time and were patient with me, whether to offer advice or words of encouragement.

Why did you choose a career in drums?

Well, I truly feel like God drew me to the drums when I was about 13 years old at the Kingdom Life International Ministries here in St. Maarten. My purpose in life was revealed to me and I haven't looked back since, I do feel blessed for this opportunity. I love my job, whether I’m performing in front of five people or 100,000 people, the number does not dictate the level of professionalism needed to achieve the job at a high level. My dream was always to tour all over the world but remain based in St. Maarten. I really can’t see myself migrating anywhere else; just staying on this beautiful island I call my home.

What do you love about working in the music and nightlife scene here on the island?

I’m honoured to have paved the avenue, and been made relevant working alongside DJs for special events such as the legendary Cut Creator DJ Outkast, Dj Blaze, DJ Big Boss, DJ Maestro, BB Bad and DJ King Kembe, just to name a few.

What organizations, groups, and bands do you work with?

I work with and am a part of the Karibbean Riddim Group (KRG) an organization of people who are working in the best interests of artists and musicians alike. I have worked with bands such as SMS Experience, REMO and the BARBWIRE band, Fire Coral Band, Royalty and the KRG band, Roxsy and the KRG Band. I have had the pleasure of working with the majority of bands here on the island, but have also done music tours in Anguilla, St. Barths, other Caribbean islands, the USA and Europe.

Tell us a bit more about your experience in this creative profession?

I see things in a spiritual way. God places challenges in our lives so that we can be the people we are supposed to be. Keeping that in mind, even though stumbling blocks might not be convenient, I know I’m equipped with the tools to tackle any situation that presents itself in front of me.

Can you tell us some of the international artistes you’ve been able to perform alongside?

Well, I have had the pleasure to work with some amazing international artistes. Jimmy Buffet, Alison Hinds, MC Solar, Maureen, Daville, Demarco, Yannick Noah, Lady Saw, Bankie Banx, Omari Banks, Manu Lanvin, Ridge DJ Taffy, Quan, Nice, Little boy, Asa Bantan and Gwada G are just a few of them.

What are your other interests outside of music?

Well, besides being a musician, I am also a proud father. I have to maintain the proper balance between having a nightlife profession and being there for my kids.

Looks like you also take time to work out. What gym do you go to?

Yes. My gym workouts are also a priority. I go to the Powerhouse Gym in Philipsburg near Pondfill.

What is your favourite place for a burger in Sint Maarten; and would you recommend there to someone who’s visiting the island?

Nowhere Special is my go-to for an amazing burger. There is always live music and a decent crowd with great vibes and good service. Plus, it is in the heart of the party area and is very convenient for most tourists to check out. I always enjoy it there!

What makes St. Maarten magical to you?

I call it the real land of the free and it is, this is where I feel truly at peace and boundless. From the beaches to the people who strive to do and be more. Tourists come here and express their love for my country by coming back – sometimes up to five times a year – and this lets me know what I already know: My island truly is a paradise.

What are your plans for concerts and travel in 2025?

There are plans for a 2025 Caribbean/ European tour with some artistes that I’m not at liberty to name at this moment; but I am getting ready to head back out on tour very soon with a major artiste named Maureen and her team for another European run.
