Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) is the organizer of the Caribbean Multihull Challenge (CMC) Race and Rally set to begin with registration and a welcome party on January 29; and continuing with four days of racing and cruising until Sunday, February 2.
Stephen Burzon, Volunteer Marketing and Operations Director for the CMC, is proud to be leading the charge to make the first day of the event (January 30) a boon for Great Bay Beach, the Boardwalk, and all of town with the introduction of a new event set for day-one of the rally called the Great Bay Beach and Boardwalk Jamboree: “We are perfectly aligned with the vision and energy of Grisha Heyliger-Marten – the Minister of TEATT – to bring new life to the area. Our supporters at Port St. Maarten and at St. Maarten Tourism suggested that we might consider bringing the soon to be seven-year-old CMC to Philipsburg; and we answered their request with the creation of this exciting new event.”
The Jamboree will begin at noon with a three-hour series of Diam 24 Trimaran sailboat, racing in heats along the beach just outside of the swimming area. These sport boats can reach speeds of 25mph with the right winds – and no matter what, they are a delight to watch, flying upwind with one hull in the air or soaring downwind with their colourful gennakers filled. The photo moments are aplenty. All are invited to the upper deck at Dutch Blonde Beach Bar to enjoy their food and craft beer and listen to the announcer’s comment on the racing.
Then at 3:00pm, sailors, islanders and visitors will hustle to the sports park on the beach to compete for prizes in beach volleyball, tug of war, beach soccer until 5:00pm when it is time for a break and a mosey over to the St. Rose Arcade for music and drinks. Then revellers can eat and drink at establishments along the boardwalk until 8:00pm, enjoying the specials at Big Bastard’s Beach Bar, Holland House, and Taloula Mango’s among others.
On Thursday, January 30 at 8pm, all will be treated to a dynamic fireworks show presented by SXM-SBH Fireworks; our island’s premier producers of so many great shows on Sint Maarten and St. Barths. Mark your calendar, round up friends and family, and come on over!
