Luncheon @ Loterie

It was lovely weather the day that a group of ladies headed along to Loterie Farm for an eagerly awaited lunch date.

Arranged by St. Maarten Yacht Club each month, women members and their guests are invited to lunch, which is usually at the yacht club, but every now and then a venue is decided on that gives some of the women a chance to go “someplace else.” What a joy it is to be together in an all-female group sometimes where food and drink – in fact everything – are pre-arranged; no planning, booking, getting kids ready, making sure husbands are on time, etc., for the woman of the house to undertake. Just arrive and everything is done.

And so it was that we arrived at Loterie Farm and were shown to the VIP area where a large bottle of pink rose, ice and chilled glasses awaited us. This lounge, like all “rooms” at Loterie, is open-air. Roof overhead, yes, but no windows and therefore no air-conditioning; just cool breezes wafting in with an occasional leaf or two!

The seating is deep, cushioned bench-like along the outer edges of the deck, low coffee tables are placed strategically. The view is of tree tops and one looks down on green lawns with lush plantings or up to the pool area where again lush plantings meet one’s gaze.

For this event, pre-ordered dishes of popular finger foods were delivered on large platters. The organizer had planned a very filling and delicious meal. Wine and water (sparkling and flat) were flowing and of course should we have wanted to, we could have ordered some individual dishes or at extra cost. We had a little rain squall pass by but by that time, everyone was very happy and feeling relaxed and full and chatting away.

Of the dishes that were laid out for our finger buffet meal and totally wolfed down by the group were fish cakes (accras) served with a great chili sauce (sauce chien); the chicken curry wraps were simply delicious; the ribs were messy as all good ribs should be; there was a wonderful pasta salad with smoked salmon; we had a lovely fresh Greek style salad; we also had tender chicken sates to nibble on – actually to devour!

A fresh fruit platter ended the meal although a couple of us could not resist ordering a chocolate brownie and ice cream, (to share mind you,) truly adding the cherry to the top. But that was not all; at the end of the meal, the good old bottle of “fruited rum” or is it “rum’ed fruit” was brought out. A sweeter ending to a fine luncheon in fabulous company you could not find better anywhere.
