~ Valentine’s delight any time ~
My beau and I decided to treat ourselves to an early Valentine’s date last weekend. Having heard nice things about the live music at The Harbor on Saturday nights, we thought that might be the warm, magical and romantic setting we needed. We already knew the food was top notch, so the plan was hatched and a phone call made. During the conversation we were informed that the band was Cacao, a three man combo that specialized in Latin and popular music, and that they would come on at 8:00pm. We reserved a table on the balcony from where we could see and hear the band for 8:00pm.
Upon arrival we were greeted enthusiastically and shown to our table on the terrace. The joint was jumping with tourists, sailors and locals, the band was just starting, and big screens were flashing NBA action for those who followed the games. In no time at all I was sipping on a lovely, fresh-tasting Painkiller cocktail and it was doing just what its name promises. Rum with pineapple and coconut milk seems like all the best things in life, poured over ice and dusted with a little nutmeg. Simple pleasures are the best.
We perused the menu and decided to keep it old school with a cheese burger and a chicken saté, but these were upscale versions of the regular island fare and we were pleasantly surprised with the generous platters of food that arrived. The single skewer of chicken might sound like an under-serving, but it was in fact a great deal of perfectly prepared white meat in large cubes, which were covered in peanut sauce and dusted with something crunchy and delicious. The burger was a tall one, with onion rings inside providing some of the height. The 100 per cent beef was savoury and well prepared, served with coleslaw and fries, an excellent all around burger experience.
The band played wonderful melodies, some popular tunes, but mostly romantic Spanish ballads, like “Quizás, quizás, quizás.” Several couples danced the night away as the guitarists and the pianist smiled and serenaded – it seemed like the whole place was in the mood for Valentine, even though we had a week to wait.
Luckily you are reading this just in time to make your plans for the real night. February 14 falls on a Sunday this year and The Harbor is open all day and night to tryst with your special someone to your heart’s content. But if you want to enjoy the live music of Cacao, plan for Saturday night and bring your dancing shoes!
