Renovating and beautifying playgrounds

One of the many projects that SXM DOET is involved with is that of renovating and beautifying playgrounds at schools and in various other places. There aren’t that many playgrounds on the island so we should try to keep the few that we have in good order. Playing outside is major fun for kids and just one of the ways in which they can remain active, while breathing in fresh air and having fun with their friends.

Just as concrete structures, playgrounds also need to be maintained in order for them not to deteriorate. Depending on what type of material the playground equipment is made of, based on things like usage and environment, it may require frequent maintenance or just an occasional refurbishment like re-painting, strengthening a particular part, or even replacing screws which may have fallen out. The idea is to keep it structurally safe, bright and attractive looking.

These types of projects are great for kids to work on, with adult supervision of course. It’s a moment during which they can learn. It takes a bit of work to make sure the things they like to use are working well and are also safe. These types of activities can also encourage children or even adults to get creative and explore more options in regard to beautification of the facility.

Fun ideas

There are tons of great ways you can beautify a playground: Think of adding some flowers or plants in the area of the playground; this is also an opportunity to give kids the responsibility of taking care of something and observing it grow as time passes. Old tires can be found and painted in various colours, plants can be placed in a few of the tires while some of them can be used as decorations, swings, or for the children to jump in and around – the possibilities are endless.

If the surface of the playground is made out of concrete, find out if you can paint it. Involve the children and ask them what they would like to paint. How about hopscotch? This is a game which can be played every day and will help kids with their balance, body control, coordination and even social skills. Each box and number can be painted in bright, fun colours.

Another example of beautifying a playground is to add seating. At some schools, the students use picnic tables; they can sit at the tables during the day to work together or to work quietly by themselves or to read in groups. Parents can also use them when they are waiting for their children and can gather at the tables when there’s an event taking place on the school premises.

The goal is to use the tables to enhance the surroundings while at the same time creating a practical utility for parents and students. Take time to talk to your children about giving back to the community by volunteering and helping others when possible. Receiving is nice, but when we give back, it’s a testament to the love we share for one another on our lovely island.

Here’s a list of the 2017 Renovation and Beautification projects, which may be in your area. Decide where you would like to assist: M&M Playschool & Afternoon Program, Safe Haven Foundation, Helmich Snijders Hillside Christian School, St. Maarten Housing Development Foundation and Sister Regina Primary School.
