Disability Awareness Fair to foster inclusivity

Disability Awareness Fair to foster inclusivity

By Foresee Foundation

The communities of Hope Estate and Guana Bay, and all interested persons are invited to a Disability Awareness Fair, set for Saturday, July 13 from 12:00 noon to 6:00pm. The grounds of the SBC Guided Living at Hope Estate will be transformed into a hub for interaction, understanding, and celebration, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the White and Yellow Cross and the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development and Labor.

This fair serves as an opportunity for community members to connect with the differently-abled clients of the Sister Basilia Center (SBC) Guided Living. The primary aim is to foster a deeper understanding of inclusivity and acceptance of individuals who are often overlooked in mainstream society.

Visitors to the fair will have the chance to engage with the Sister Basilia Center clients and gain insights into their daily lives and the challenges they face. This personal interaction is designed to break down barriers and dispel misconceptions about disabilities.

The White and Yellow Cross organizers along with the government of Sint Maarten have ensured that the event is accessible to all.

The Disability Awareness Fair is more than just an event – it’s a movement towards a more inclusive society. By participating, attendees are not just enjoying a day of fun and learning but are actively contributing to a culture of acceptance and understanding. So mark your calendars for July 13, and come to SBC Guided Living, Hope Estate. Join hands with your neighbours to celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and make a difference in the lives of those who enrich our community with their unique perspectives and talents.

What is SBC Guided Living?

Guided Living, or semi-independent living, allows clients of a higher cognitive level to live semi-independently among others in the community. These clients go to work daily and plan their activities with the help of their mentors.

Clients of Guided Living have been trained in personal hygiene, daily chores, and finding their way in the community. All clients of Guided Living have to be 18 years or older. They must be able to take care of their apartment, prepare their meals, and budget their finances. Supervision and help with this are offered on-site.
