Kathy Deher: The heart behind St. Maarten’s Animal Welfare Foundation

By Foresee Foundation

Kathy Deher’s dedication to the wellbeing of St. Maarten’s animals has earned her a well-deserved spotlight from the Animal Welfare Foundation (AWF). As one of the AWF founders, Kathy’s story is one of compassion, commitment, and a deep love for her island’s most vulnerable creatures.

Kathy’s journey with the AWF began out of necessity. Witnessing the heart-breaking reality of sick, starving and abandoned animals on St. Maarten, she couldn’t stand idly by. Her love for the island and its animals drove her to take action, leading to the establishment of the foundation in 1992. From the beginning, Kathy played a crucial role in shaping the foundation’s mission and ensuring its ongoing success.

Under Kathy’s guidance, the AWF focused on addressing the root causes of animal suffering on the island. The foundation’s primary initiatives have included spay- and neuter-programs to control the animal population, and humane education to raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare. These efforts have not only improved the health and wellbeing of St. Maarten’s domestic animals, but have also made a significant impact on the island’s overall environment.

Today, the AWF continues to thrive, thanks in a large part to Kathy’s leadership. Her influence has helped secure funding, develop new strategies, and foster a community that is more and more dedicated to the humane treatment of animals. Kathy’s story is a testament to the difference one person can make, and it’s no wonder she was selected for the AWF’s spotlight feature.

Volunteer activities and initiatives:

Over the past 32 years, Kathy has been deeply involved in numerous volunteer activities with the AWF. Currently, she is often seen at the Animal Welfare shop at Dock Maarten whenever a cruise ship is in port, helping to raise funds and spread awareness. Additionally, Kathy plays a key role in delivering the Kind News magazine to many schools on the Dutch side of the island, helping to educate children about the importance of the humane treatment of animals.

Kathy Deher was selected for the spotlight because she is one of the original founders of the St. Maarten Animal Welfare Foundation.
