The sale of Belair Beach Resort caught the attention in Thursday’s edition. The 72-unit complex was bought by a Miami-based investor.
A “significant transformation” has been announced by the group. They bring local experience from the former Great Bay Beach Resort, while preserving the legacy of this more than 40-year-old shore-front property was called a top priority, to ensure future plans align with the bests interests of loyal guests and the island.
Details were not provided, but the stated intention is to reposition Belair as a world-class vacation club resort. Rights of current timeshare weeks and condo owners must obviously be respected in the process.
Considering all the new visitor accommodations under construction and fears of over-development, it is refreshing to note that an existing one will be modernised instead. Within the hospitality sector an argument has been made that there are presently enough rooms on the Dutch side, so a bigger effort should take place to improve these where necessary and occupy them first.
A possible moratorium on large-scale tourism-related projects was recently discussed in Parliament due to an overburdened infrastructure and environment, but the idea does not have enough political backing. Nevertheless, upgrading what’s already there in any case seems like a good alternative.
