ST. EUSTATIUS--A Plus Academic and Professional Training Centre recently opened its doors in St. Eustatius. The centre on De Graaffweg aims to provide supplementary education for children ages 12 to 18 on weekdays from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.
The centre is the dream-child of Jamaica-born Andrenne Roulston. “Our Centre has four classrooms and will soon be equipped with a sizeable computer lab. We have very qualified teachers and volunteers to assist with formal coaching and educational support such as homework. We are going to create a motivational environment where students explore their potential to succeed.”
Subjects will vary and include the curriculum for the new Cambridge English, Dutch and Math as well as Administration and Accountancy. Roulston and her colleagues hope to extend the educational syllabus with more business-oriented subjects as soon as possible.
Roulston, who holds a Master’s of Science and Accountancy degree and a Teaching Diploma, believes firmly that her students will receive and benefit from “this extra push.”
“We have worked very closely with the Gwendoline van Putten School to get this project off the ground. Also important has been the contribution of many corporate sponsors who understand and appreciate the importance of promoting skills and young talent on St. Eustatius,” she said.
The Centre has also has a children’s reading programme starting May 21 and continuing until December. The sessions will be one day a week (Mondays or Wednesdays) from 4:00pm to 5:00pm.
A summer school is also planned to prepare high school students for the new school term.
“Onward, Upward and Ever Higher” is the slogan for the training centre.
