Damage to the front of the car; the driver was killed when he collided with a wall early Sunday morning.
COLE BAY--A traffic accident on Union Road in Cole Bay around 12:15am Sunday claimed the life of a man T.J.W. (30) when he lost control of his vehicle and ran into a side wall.
According to police, the man was driving “extremely hard” on Union Road heading in the direction of the Bellevue/Cole Bay border when he lost control of his vehicle in the vicinity of restaurant Subway and collided into a side wall. He was driving a white Kia Rio with Dutch-side licence plates.
The force of the collision crushed the front end of the vehicle, resulting in W.’s death. The car’s engine block had penetrated the interior of the vehicle and the rear doors were completely dislodged from the vehicle’s frame. The rear doors were found several metres away from the scene of the crash.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly afterwards. W.’s lifeless body was found at the wheel and the St. Maarten Fire Department had to be called to pry him out of the car.
“Condolences go out to the family of the victim,” said police on Sunday night.
