Bonaire activist took his case to Caricom

Finies in The Bahamas.

BONAIRE--On May 7 and 8 James Finies of Foundation “Nos Ke Boneiru Bek” (NKBB) was in the Nassau, Bahamas where Caribbean Community Caricom’s Cofcor gathering was held at the Hilton. The trip was based on the result of meetings at the beginning of April with Caricom assistant Secretary General Granderson and with Guyana’s vice-President and Minister of Foreign Affairs Greenidge in Georgetown, Guyana.

“NKBB travelled to the Bahamas based on their statements where they indicated publicly that they would not hesitate to call on us if further explanations are needed because of the atrocities that Holland are committing against us,” stated Finies in a press release.

Finies met with several member countries, ambassadors, lawmakers, human rights lawyers etc. He said they were in disbelief that in this 21st century and within their own backyard Bonaire and St. Eustatius are still under colonial rule and deemed this as unacceptable.

“The support and solidarity of these Caricom countries were overwhelming, since most of them think Holland is one of the richest nations and the Bonairean and Statian peoples are enjoying the same richness with equal rights in the Kingdom.

“Also for the first time Caribbean nations are hearing of the Sint Eustatius overthrowing of Statia’s elected government and halting the upcoming elections of 2019, so they were perplexed by this undemocratic situation in the Caribbean. Caricom Secretary General LaRocque emphasised and urged the people of Bonaire and NKBB to continue this right path of advocating the plight of the Bonairean of Statian peoples among the Caribbean countries.

“The Caricom countries are important in the quest of Bonaire and St. Eustatius to re-list as non-self-governing territories of the United Nations so they fall under the protection of the UN’s Special Committee C24, where the Dutch Government has to report back according to international law to the General Assembly. As members of such they have voting rights to place us on this list.”

NKBB says it will continue after The Bahamas towards other regional countries to promote awareness as well as solicit support and solidarity regarding “the undemocratic situation and abuse of power from the Netherlands on the islands of Bonaire and St. Eustatius.”
