The car on fire on Monday night.
SIMPSON BAY--A grey Mitsubishi Lancer was almost completely destroyed in a fire on Welfare Road shortly before 10:00pm Monday.
The driver was travelling on Welfare Road toward Simpson Bay when he noticed smoke suddenly entering the car, presumably from the air conditioning vents. Shortly after he pulled over between La Sucriere Bakery and Top Carrot, the car burst into flames.
Up in flames.
The St. Maarten Fire Department responded to the blaze around 10:00pm and had the fire under control by 10:30pm. However, by this time about two-thirds of the car had burned, as the flames started from the engine and worked their way to the trunk.
The driver escaped the incident without injury. No other persons were in the car at the time.
Two police officers were seen speaking to the driver while firefighters doused the burning vehicle with water.
