PHILIPSBURG--The Foundation Catholic Education St. Maarten SKOS recently hosted its first “Welcome to SXM” event for new teachers from abroad who recently started their employment in St. Maarten.
A total of 29 new teachers and staff joined the foundation. “The goal of this event was to show the gratitude towards the new staff for choosing to share their knowledge and expertise on St. Maarten and in particular at the Catholic schools,” it was stated in a press release.
“It also served as a meet and greet event where new teachers could be welcomed by the existing team.” The event was themed “St. Maarten” and local dishes were served to acquaint the new teachers with the local cuisine.
Dow’s Musical Foundation played local steel pan music to create a nice local ambiance. In a bid to have the new teachers become more familiar with St. Maarten beyond the classroom, the foundation wanted to also give them the opportunity to explore the nature and heritage of the island and to hopefully become more connected and therefore extend their stay on the island.
Through the generosity of Tri-Sport St. Maarten and Reef-It St. Maarten some lucky teachers won raffle prizes which included snorkelling tours, kayaking tours and bicycling tours.
“The foundation is very grateful for their support, and would like to express its sincere gratitude to these businesses for supporting the educational system.”
SKOS thanked teachers and staff for ensuring that the 2019-2020 academic year had “a smooth and energetic start,” and expressed hope that staffers would have a productive and fun school year. The foundation said it is gearing up for its 130th anniversary this school year, and is grateful for all the input and dedication of current and former staffers.
