Coast Guard on alert for August Monday

SIMPSON BAY--In connection with the upcoming August Monday celebrations in Anguilla on Monday, August 5, the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard (DCCG) informs the public that all applicable regulations will be strictly enforced in the interest of safety.

The DCCG reminds the boating community to be cautious and to monitor any weather developments, as rough weather conditions are expected early next week. The Coast Guard advises following Meteorological Department St. Maarten closely for more information on the weather conditions, the organisation said Friday.

The Coast Guard patrols daily and will be extra alert to all activities on the seas within its jurisdiction. “We would like to remind the public of the maritime regulations, as stipulated by law, and the consequences of not abiding by the rules,” the Coast Guard said.

All sailors are urged to exercise caution and implement good seamanship. Boat captains should have the ship registry on hand and all the necessary ship’s documents on board, and should have at least one other able crew member with them at all times.

There should be sufficient suitable lifejackets on board for each and every passenger, including lifejackets specifically for children if these are on board. Vessels should also be provided with the prescribed navigational lights.

Vessels should have valid lifesaving devices, fire extinguishers, and everything deemed necessary by the harbourmaster for the conservation of the boat and the safety of crew and passengers.

Transporting more persons than is indicated on the certificate of seaworthiness is not allowed. Operating and/or sailing a vessel while being under the influence of alcoholic beverages or any other intoxicating substances is also not permitted.

“All rules and regulations under St. Maarten’s penal code will be strictly enforced for your safety. Should you observe or notice anything out of the ordinary, please, call 913 for your safety and that of all others. The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard wishes everyone a safe voyage,” the organisation said.
