De Weever: Constant promotion means travellers see recovery

POND ISLAND--Constant profiling of the country’s recovery and availability of hotel rooms is a signal to travellers of St. Maarten’s comeback almost nine months after Hurricane Irma pummelled the local area, says Tourism and Economic Affairs Minister Cornelius de Weever.

De Weever’s remarks follow the May 15 USA Today article titled “Summer’s on sale at luxurious Caribbean resorts.” It called on Americans to check out summer sales and swap backyard barbecues and buggy city nights for beach bargains and breezy trade winds.

The feature states that St. Maarten is up and running with more than 1,000 hotel rooms and 46 villas open, along with many flights connecting the island with the outside world.

“This type of promotion is a testament to travellers that the destination is recovering and has much to offer on both sides of the island,” said De Weever. “This positive story should lead to an increase in summer bookings to the destination. In the coming months a number of other hotel properties and adjacent hospitality services will be re-opening.”
