AIRPORT--The Domino's Pizza branch at Princess Juliana International Airport SXM and Winair comfortably stayed within the target goal of an hour in the attempt to set a world record by delivering pizza to eight countries/islands from one location. The feat was accomplished in 45 minutes on Friday, August 21.
Pizzas were delivered to St. Maarten, St. Martin, Anguilla, St. Barths, Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Kitts and Nevis. The original idea also included Tortola, but the runway was closed that night. Some were delivered by air, some by land and one by sea.
The innovative idea is expected to create a flurry of local and international media coverage, especially online. The entire process was well documented and a director from Hollywood, John Hess, coordinated taping of the events from various vantage points, which will be compiled into a video tailored to become viral.
An announcement of the world record attempt was covered by online media outlet Buzz60.
Local Domino's owner John Caputo said he was "thoroughly amazed at the power of what's possible. You set out for something and sometimes it's a crazy idea, but with a passionate and awesome team behind you, things seem to work. ... It's so awesome to see all these things come together."
It was actually harder to deliver to the French side, Caputo said, than some of the neighbouring islands.
Together with Winair President and CEO Michael Cleaver, Caputo showed off the feat with a display board at the celebration at the airport.
Those involved said the success was owed to the strong team effort and cooperation of all players: Domino's, Winair and various teams within the airport.
The feat will be submitted to Guinness World Records, which initially said no record existed for such an attempt, but gave certain criteria, and the activities were logged and documented by three different measurements as proof.
A short impromptu video of pizza delivery from the same location to Saba, by visiting travel journalist Leslie Yip, went viral within the day very recently.
