Driver in fatal hit and run case will not be prosecuted

PHILIPSBURG--The driver responsible for the death of Roy Flanders on Saturday January 27, at 4:00am, while driving on Union Road near Ace Mega Centre will not face any charges for not reporting the incident five months ago, or go to prison for driving off while Flanders was on the street helpless.

The suspect with the initials J.F.A recently walked into the police station and confessed to the accident and gave a complete and accurate statement to detectives of what exactly transpired that night, Police spokesman Chief Inspector Ricardo Henson stated in a press release on Wednesday.
Flanders was known to be mentally challenged, according to police. Flanders was the first road fatality victim for 2018.
Police said that the prosecutor dealing with traffic cases was continuously updated with the progress of the investigation.
The prosecutor was also informed of the statement given by the suspect and after reviewing the entire case concluded that this case was purely an unfortunate accident, and based on the statement given by the suspect and on the request of the mother of the victim, the prosecutor decided not follow through with any prosecution and ordered the case closed.
