Electronic surveillance

Minister of Justice Cornelius de Weever has announced that St. Maarten will soon see the implementation of electronic ankle bracelets for those who commit petty crimes, youth delinquency and prisoners who have served years and may be eligible for early release.

However, the minister did not state what company will provide the service, how much the government is spending on this programme and how many ankle bracelets would be available. “Mr. Clark will be on the island soon to assist with the implementation of the electronic ankle bracelets,” stated De Weever during Wednesday’s Council of Ministers press briefing. The Daily Herald sent several questions about the programme to the minister and his cabinet, but no answer was received on Wednesday.
