MARIGOT--The Gendarmerie disclosed it had checked some 130 vehicles during controls conducted with the assistance of the Territorial Police and Dutch-side police on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
The checkpoints were set up at the roundabouts in Hope Estate, Agrément and near the former tourism office in Sandy Ground.
Emphasis was put on checking whether vehicles were carrying licence plates, as the grace period following Hurricane Irma has ended. Some 70 vehicle owners received summonses to have their vehicles fitted with licence plates within a week to conform to regulations, or receive a fine. It was also indicted that use of the “W” is strictly forbidden.
In addition, fines were issued to five persons for driving without a license or with an invalid license, two of which applied to two-wheeled vehicles. Four instances of driving without valid insurance and one fine for not wearing a seat belt were recorded.
