Haitians attempted to leave with $44,656

PHILIPSBURG--Three Haitian nationals who were attempting to leave the country with a combined total of US $44,656 were caught by authorities at Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA) on Wednesday. Acting Customs Head F. Bernadina said in a press release on Friday that customs officers at PJIA along with immigration Justice K9 and the Alpha Team caught the three passengers during a joint control at the airport on August 12.

The three passengers’ initials are N.Z, J.L. and JN.L.

The Public Prosecutor issued fines to the three for breaching the country’s laws. By law it is required for persons travelling with monies exceeding US $10,000, or the equivalent in other currencies to declare the funds at Customs. No arrests were made. Bernadina said Customs will continue to intensify its controls at the Airport and at Port St. Maarten.
